Astigmatism
Astigmatism is best defined as a defect in the manner in which the eye cornea or lens is shaped. The cornea is the clear dome-like exterior portion of the eye that rests atop the pupil and iris. Healthy eyes have an equal and smooth curve along both the lens and the cornea. If distorted astigmatism is present, the eye will look like an egg, ultimately bending light that moves toward it. The asymmetry of light distribution causes refractive errs that lead to insufficient eyesight. If you experience abnormal symptoms, contact us right away at (812) 346-2020 to schedule an appointment. Our eye doctor will evaluate your eyes, perform an accurate diagnosis and determine if you can benefit from a treatment plan.
It must be noted astigmatism can develop as time progresses or be present at birth. The problem with astigmatism is it compromises eyesight up close and at a distance, possibly even elongating the cornea or eye lens, causing myopia. Astigmatism is corrected with orthokeratology. This therapy requires the use of a contact lens at nighttime that reshapes the cornea to correct moderate astigmatism. Surgery is another option in which lasers eliminate excess tissue from the eye’s cornea. However, glasses are the easiest and safest treatment modality. Our optometrist will prescribe the ideal lenses for your unique astigmatism.
