Glaucoma

You might be pre-glaucomic or glaucomic and not even know it. Even if your eyes feel perfectly fine and you see the world exactly as it is, you still might have glaucoma. This is precisely why we recommend patients schedule a yearly comprehensive eye exam at our office by dialing (812) 346-2020. Glaucoma occurs when fluid builds up within the eye’s anterior chamber, causing elevated pressure on the optic nerve. There are treatment modalities for glaucoma that do not require surgery. Our eye doctors will develop a treatment plan specific to your glaucoma. Prescription medication might be necessary. Eye drops, pills and injections are also available to slow the progression of your glaucoma.

Those who desire a treatment modality that does not mandate daily administering will favor Durysta. This sustained-release medication is injectable, meaning it will reduce eye pressure and help create the optimal eye pressure level as time progresses. As long as glaucoma is identified early, it is possible to treat it without surgery. However, if glaucoma is discovered late or if medication does not work, surgical treatment will be considered. Laser surgery for glaucoma, dubbed trabeculoplasty, enhances the eye drainage functionality to keep eye pressure at the optimal level. Iridotomy is a laser-based treatment in which small holes are created within the iris to enhance the flow of eye fluid. Operative surgery involves the use of a microscope and instruments to generate a bypass channel for drainage so the fluid in the eye moves out, ultimately reducing eye pressure.
